Transforming Urban Landscapes: The Parabuilding Revolution
In most American cities, the move to remote working has generated a crisis in the commercial building market. The idea of converting office buildings to residential or other uses, long considered desirable but impractical is gaining greater acceptance. I explored the acts of subtraction and addition demanded by the conversion of office to residential. The area removed from a building by this process can be rebuilt in a new form resulting in a “parabuilding”. 222 South Riverside Plaza in Chicago, built in 1971, is an ideal example of the type of office to be converted.
